Seminar Overview:
From Academia to Data Science Industry – A Physicist Perspective
Artificial intelligence, data science (DS), and machine learning have revolutionized the majority of industry over the last decade. This emerging and rapidly growing field offers a unique and indispensable role that bridges between traditional engineering and business decision-making processes. Why is DS so influential? What are the recent trends? What does a DS do on a daily basis, and how to become one in the industry? Will it be popular forever? Based on my personal DS journey, I am going to share my first-hand industrial experience with you and provide my perspective on developing a DS career.
About the Speakers
Dr. Chris Chan received his B.Sc. and M.Phil. from the Department of Physics at HKUST. He then pursued his academic career in the U.S. and obtained his Ph.D. at UCSD, and became a physics postdoctoral scholar and researcher at Harvard University, MIT, and UCLA. Equipped with his academic background, Chris decided to transition into the data industry and he is now an experienced data scientist, technical leader, consultant, and manager.
